UW professors tap new possibilities for solar power | trib.com

The scientists at the University of Wyoming is trying to develop solar panels and solar car batteries with higher energy efficiency. They are planning to provide a 4 percent increase in energy efficiency. According to their research, they found that adding Magnesium atoms to solar cells will increase the energy conversion rate to 300 percent. Currently, some states like Colorado have large solar fields supplying industry scale electricity to houses and offices. By the research conducting in the University of Wyoming the solar power will be available easily. The Rock Spring Airport installed solar panels with a grant from Rocky Mountain Power which will reduce the energy bills in the next 15 years.

“A farmer may need a water pump in a remote area to water his livestock,” explained Dahnovsky, one of the study’s authors and a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. “If there’s no electricity, he may use solar cells to power the water pump".

When there is growth and research happen in the solar technology it will help to reduce the use of non-renewable energy sources. Also, the cost for the development of solar or wind-related products will decrease soon. In Wyoming, they are depending mostly on the traditional fuel sources like coal and natural gas. This is their major income generators. But for a better future people start to support solar products. 

The professors’ research was funded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Basic Energy Sciences, via UW’s EPSCoR program, which encourages nationally competitive research and diversity in STEM fields.
